All Teen Self-Esteem

There are many reasons why teens lose some of their self-confidence during puberty, including developing bodies, hormone surges, peer pressure, academics, and new social situations. Add in social media, and these stressors can have a negative impact on the self-esteem of a young person.

Low self-esteem is common during adolescence. Low self-esteem is a mood disorder when a person views themselves as inadequate, unlovable, and/or incompetent. When a teen has negative self-esteem, it can control every thought and produce ongoing self-defeating behavior.

The good news is there are many ways we can build up our teens’ self-esteem. Healthy self-esteem protects kids from peer pressure, drug use, early sexual activity, and other dangerous behavior.

Good self-esteem can also help teens develop resiliency which is so important in today’s challenging world. Being able to overcome obstacles and setbacks is an important life skill.
