Inside: Need some great adventure book series for tweens? We have you covered!
Getting your tween to read can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. But there is a little secret to keep your pre-teen reading at a time when many kids abandon their love of books. Finding the genre that excites them is often all it takes to relight the fire for reading. A good book series can take a reluctant reader and turn them into a bookworm! They’ll start with one, and then they’ll be hooked.
There are many benefits to reading adventure books
A good adventure story has the ability to draw us into a world we might otherwise never go to visit. It may give your child courage or perspective, promote empathy, or take them out of the doldrums of their everyday life. It could give even prompt a little spark of adventure inside us we didn’t know was there.
Adventure books are usually a pretty sure bet for sparking big kid’s interest. These books, full of action-packed pages, will take your tween’s imagination for a ride that they won’t want to get off. And hopefully, it will instill a love of reading that will never burn out.
Also, we like to remind parents not to look down on graphic novels, particularly at this age. The goal is to foster a love of reading, and whether that is in a more animated form or a gigantic Harry Potter hardcover, just keep encouraging your child to read.

Great Adventure Book Series to Recommend to Your Tween
RANGERS APPRENTICE
With over five million copies sold in the United States and more than a thousand five-star Amazon reviews, this is one of the best book series out there for tweens and a sure-fire winner for an older kid. Author John Flanagan writes it in a way where It’s similar to Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit and is the perfect hero/villain story. The Rangers are protectors of the kingdom, but will they win the day? You’ll have to read to figure it out!
FIVE KINGDOMS
These fantasy books also have a ton of five-star reviews on Amazon and were written by a New York Times Best Selling Brandon Mull. The fantastic story arcs across different worlds and different scenarios. As a bonus, the main character also struggles with making tough decisions in his personal life. These decisions are comparable to real world choices that our pre-teens struggle with on the daily.
MAGNUS CHASE
After dealing with his mother’s mysterious death, Magnus Chase is living alone on the streets of Boston. Through a series of interesting events, Magnus realizes that he’s actually a Norse God. And thus begins a wild adventure as he tries to find his way. With over 2,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, this four-book fantasy series is sure to be a hit on your child’s bookcase.
If your child loves this series, then you should also try the other Rick Riordan series (including the full Percy Jackson series.) My children have read them ALL (and so have I)! A few highlights include:
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
The Kane Chronicles
The Heroes of Olympus
The Trials of Apollo
THE LAND OF STORIES
Twins Alex and Conner find themselves in a whole new world, and face to face with childhood fairy tale characters. The Land of Stories series combines classic fairy tales commingled with their real-world life prove to be a wild ride for these young boys and girls. Will they be able to get home? Ask your young reader!
TIME QUINTET
We’ve all fallen in love with A Wrinkle in Time, and it’s included as the first book in this awesome boxed set. Madeleine L’Engle wrote five books in total, and your child will fall in love with the characters within these pages. The adventure is new and exciting, and the problems they face are imaginative and compelling.
THE ZODIAC LEGACY SERIES
This is such an interesting series because it’s based on zodiac signs. Each character has a different zodiac sign (and thus, different strengths), and your reader will be more inclined to identify with these heroines. This is an illustrated, lengthy read, that has many exciting battles and foes. It’s a completely new way of presenting a story that is sure to keep your child’s attention.
If you’re tweens work their way through all these adventure book series, here are a few more we’d suggest.
FABLEHAVEN
This epic seven-book series also by Brandon Mull is one of our favorite book series. Kendra and her brother Seth go on a challenging quest to save the fantasy land of Fablehaven, their family, and perhaps the world. To do that they have to deal with monsters they’ve never seen before like greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, jealous fairies, and other mysterious creatures.
Our kids could not get through the Fablehaven series fast enough. They were grateful to know that Mullen has yet another great series out where candy can give you superpowers. The three-book Candy Shop Wars is also a favorite.
